What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are a plastic coating that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the premolars and molars to shield them from decay.
Why are they used?
The back teeth have chewing surfaces that have deep grooves or fissures that are difficult to clean properly, even with thorough brushing. Plaque can build up in these grooves, leading to cavities. Dental sealants provide the chewing surfaces of the back teeth with a shield against plaque and decay.
What can I expect during dental sealant placement?
To prepare for dental sealant placement, Dr. Kathryn Leahey will first clean the surfaces of the back teeth thoroughly. The teeth are then rinsed and dried. An acidic solution is used to roughen the chewing surfaces of the teeth and is then rinsed off. The roughening of the teeth allows the dental sealant to bond in place properly. The teeth are once again dried. Our pediatric dentist will then paint the dental sealant onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant may be hardened with a curing light. You will be able to chew as usual once the dental sealant has hardened.
How long do they last?
With proper care, dental sealants can last for many years. If a dental sealant becomes worn or becomes cracked, our pediatric dentist can place a new dental sealant.
